Job Description:

The Department of Safety Assessment at Genentech provides scientific leadership and plays an active role in the process of drug development from the discovery period through marketed products. We are seeking a Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist (Scientist/Senior Scientist-Pathologist) to support drug development. This role will involve working in a collaborative team environment as part of the comprehensive safety assessment of Genentech therapeutics by providing toxicologic pathology representation to small and large molecule programs.


The successful candidate for the Scientist/Senior Scientist position in Anatomic Pathology will provide scientific leadership and play an active role in the process of drug development from discovery through marketed products. In our collaborative team environment, the project pathologist will provide expert pathology support, scientific leadership, and play an active role in the process of drug development from early-stage research through marketed products. As a project team member, the pathologist will participate in the design, implementation, and data analysis of both investigative and regulatory nonclinical toxicology studies, driving comprehensive, highly integrated safety profiling of Genentech drug candidates and translational safety risk assessment.

Responsibilities include active cross-functional collaboration, interdisciplinary project team participation, scientific leadership in the design and implementation of safety assessment strategies to support program advancement and decision-making, preparation and review of regulatory documentation, study reports and manuscripts, representation of Genentech in meetings with regulatory authorities, investigations into mechanisms of toxicity, proactive management of potential safety liabilities and communication of impact to teams and governance committees, and participation in cross-industry consortia and professional society initiatives. Experience with cross-functional teams and capability to build productive cross-functional internal and external collaborations are desired.


  • DVM or equivalent, Board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or European College of Veterinary Pathology (ECVP).
  • PhD or equivalent in pathology or related discipline preferred, but significant (5+ years) experience in toxicologic pathology within a pharmaceutical/biotechnology setting will also be considered.
  • Practical and theoretical expertise in understanding the pathologic basis of disease, with active commitment to and enthusiasm for understanding mechanisms of toxicity. Experience in toxicologic pathology and the development and use of novel animal models of disease is desirable.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in collaboration, scientific guidance and communication with non-DVM scientists and laboratory staff.
  • Willingness to advance applications of digital pathology.
  • The successful candidate must also demonstrate strong decision-making, complex problem solving, critical data analysis and interpretation, excellent written and verbal communication skills, scientific productivity, and the ability to build productive cross-functional collaborations both within and external to Genentech.
