The Global Head of PHC Strategy and Chief of Staff leads a team that establishes and guides the PHC and Pharma organizations to a clear line of sight based on external landscape and broad Roche TA / DA strategies to orient and optimize activities of the PHC function and its collaborators. Together with the team, leads an ongoing process to co-create strategies with partners (e.g. TA heads), to define the highest value project/activity areas for the PHC organization, and to ensure systems and approaches to aid the group in continually orienting towards tangible progress and value delivery. This leader additionally focuses on ensuring that the PHC "system" is continually improving - that the collective is building and strengthening bridges with our collaborators, that our capabilities, competencies and talent are well-understood and the focus of continuous improvement, and that special projects which are important to the collective, but would otherwise fall between cracks, get the right attention and commitment from all of the leaders and partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy: Refine, continuously evolve, and clearly articulate the overall Roche PHC strategy. Deeply understand the external landscape and co-create Roche TA/DA strategies so that they appropriately incorporate PHC. Bring a customer-focused value delivery lens to all that the PHC organization does. Fuel the PHC organization with awareness of the unparalleled opportunity of PHC to improve the lives of patients, while also being responsive to the needs of the ecosystems, partners, and platforms required to catalyze this opportunity. Create and ensure execution of tactics which result in regular assessment of risks and opportunities - aid team in accounting for potential biases and blind spots.
  • Execution: Shape and define how the pipeline for PHC innovation will work - help the PHC organization and partners make clear and informed choices about where to play and how to win relative to the market picture and Roche's position within. Create a PHC learning system which helps to codify knowledge, resources and insights - creating a future-fit for purpose knowledge funnel for PHC which complements project and product activities. Define, lead, and evolve the ongoing governance and decision-making process to serve as a mechanism for clear prioritization, rapid decision-making, and engagement with key collaborators and interfaces. In collaboration with the leadership team, oversee and manage aspects of the functional budget and headcount accountability for the function. Ensure consistent internal PHC communications which are aligned and consistent with PD & GPS - collaborate and enable teams working on external messaging and engagement around PHC to ensure our strategy and progress is clear and understood.
  • Capabilities: Define and run management systems and an operating rhythm which enables the PHC organization to thrive - including organizational alignment mechanisms, understanding how information flows, and the creation of forums and vehicles for effective intra and cross-group collaboration. If/as needed, partner with external strategy practitioners to up-level skills and approaches which contribute to collective success of PHC within Roche. Partner with HR to create talent development strategies suited to this highly interdisciplinary and specialized group.
  • Leadership: Coach, mentor, advise, influence, and lead - work with leaders of each function in PHC to create integrated, collaborative, and strategic mindsets. Ensure strong connection and understanding of other strategy groups and leads within the company (e.g Corporate, DIA, Reds, etc). Help hold leaders accountable for clear and consistent tracking of KPIs and the many other activities which result in a high performing team and function.

Competencies and Mindset

  • Strong grasp of strategy methodologies as well as innovation systems, design thinking, contemporary and emerging systems of work (agile, team of teams, dispersed teams etc.)
  • Depth in organizational design and the creation of management systems. This includes talent alignment with needs, succession, and change communication
  • An understanding of impact tools such as theory of change, time horizons and futures thinking. Able to translate ideas from macro to micro picture, to effectively manage complexity and detail while also seeking simplicity and clarity where appropriate
  • Brings a lens of evaluation and subtraction, not just addition, to the initiatives undertaken by the group
  • High EQ operator who is able to bring out the best in a team, build and coach teams, sustain momentum towards the mission. A proven leader of people with a demonstrated record of growing and attracting talent
  • Passion for learning and growth-mindset. Awareness of where and how to partner outside of this individual's circle of competence, as well as how to guide others to do this

  • 6-12 months: Co-creation of TA+PHC strategies, priorities and plan to make sustainable and improvable. PHC learning system ideas (talent, capabilities, processes) underway. PHC funnel and portfolio v1 working and intersecting with strategic vision.
  • 24 months: Scope and horizon of strategies has grown and the process has been improved and is smooth and well integrated with other core strategic processes. There is talent flow within the PHC function as well as between PHC and other collaborators - groups and individuals are working in alignment with Roche's VITAL principals and there is a strong sense of clarity about the purpose, remit and value delivery of the PHC function.


  • Clear PHC strategy outlining choices and rationales - additional related strategies (e.g. TA/DA PHC strategies) co-created with partners
  • Functioning and evolving PHC 'funnel' and portfolio, with links to strategy and other portfolio/innovation management systems within the company
  • Frameworks for measuring impact in multiple dimensions (e.g. desirability, feasibility, viability, strategic fit) and on multiple horizons.
  • Approaches in place to grow, develop and evolve and embed our PHC talent
