Scientist/Senior Scientist (Imaging/analytics) Safety Assessment Digital Pathology

Company: Genentech
Location: South San Francisco
Posted on: June 7, 2021

Job Description:

Development Sciences (DevSci) is a translational science organization that spans the entire drug discovery and development cycle - from early stage research to drug commercialization. This includes the preclinical safety evaluation of candidate therapeutic molecules by toxicologists and pathologists in the Safety Assessment department in order to enable further evaluation in humans.

Our goal in Safety Assessment Digital Pathology is to enhance these pre-clinical safety evaluations by massively increasing the information we obtain from digital histopathology slides and digital images of cell-based in vitro systems. We discover, develop, and apply computational methods to aid pathological and toxicological evaluation that hitherto, only humans have been able to do.

We seek an associate scientist to join our digital pathology and image analysis lab, dedicated to enhancing decision making in the pre-clinical drug development phase by discovering, developing, and applying cutting edge approaches such as deep learning algorithms. Currently, biomedical image analysis is under-utilized at the crucial time when candidate drugs are rigorously tested for safety and scrutinized to understand their mechanism of action. This is an opportunity to enter the exciting field of digital pathology, and make a significant contribution in developing safe, personalized drugs to best meet patient needs. Because we know that employees are critical to our success in bringing novel medicines to patients, we are dedicated to remaining a great place to work and to providing employees with programs, services and benefits that allow them to bring the best to the business and to their personal lives.

We are looking for someone inspired by our mission who fits in well with the collaborative, rigorous and entrepreneurial spirit of the company culture. We are looking for a creative AI scientist who can recognize opportunities for computational approaches to enhance toxicologic pathology decision making, identify and apply analytics methods to perform relevant analyses, generate and communicate meaningful results to stakeholders, and develop, implement, and publish new methods where none currently exist. We are looking for a highly collaborative team player who is a creative, independent thinker who thrives in a widely interdisciplinary environment and enjoys working closely with colleagues in extremely diverse fields.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in the field of image analysis, biomedical imaging, biomedical data science, biomedical engineering, statistics, machine learning, or computer vision, with experience in deep learning and image analysis, and a strong publication record. PhDs from related disciplines with a demonstrable interest in image analysis will also be considered. Experience programming in Python or MATLAB and expertise with AI/ML state of the art tools (PyTorch, Tensorflow, etc) are a must. Desired but not required are: familiarity with digital pathology and experience processing 3D datasets, especially from modalities like confocal and lightsheet microscopy or electron microscopy. Post-doc or industry experience (0-2 years) is advantageous but not required at the Scientist level.
