Job Description:

We seek a highly motivated Physician Scientist with research and/or clinical expertise in hematology/oncology to develop and drive innovative personalized healthcare and disease-focused translational efforts for the hematology franchise. Substantial expertise in all or a combination of the fields of hematology, oncology, personalized healthcare and translational research is highly desirable. The candidate will establish new collaborations, interacting with external disease experts and internal scientists, liaising across late and early stage clinical development and discovery research, with the goal to advance and accelerate the hematology pipeline. The successful candidate is expected to work seamlessly as part of a multifunctional team, have excellent oral and written communication skills, participate and contribute to team meetings, publish in high quality scientific, technical or medical journals, present at internal and external meetings. We are looking for a strong scientist/physician scientist to provide exceptional scientific leadership in translational Hematology in OBD and for our partner organizations across the Roche group.

Scope of position:

The Translational Medical Director will report to the Senior Director of Biomarkers in Hematology in the Oncology Biomarker Development (OBD) department within Genentech Research and Early Development. The individual will be responsible for the oversight of biomarker programs of one or more early and late-stage molecules or disease areas (i.e lymphoma, myeloma, AML). At the molecule level, this will entail leadership of a cross-functional project team translating scientific discoveries into clinical strategies (predictive/pharmacodynamic/resistance biomarkers, molecular response endpoints, indication selection and combination strategies). At the disease area level, the individual will build biomarker and translational capabilities to broadly support the pipeline. This position will be lab-enabled.

Primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • Responsible for translating preclinical hypotheses into clinical biomarker strategies for one or more projects or disease areas.

  • Have deep scientific expertise of the subject and disease to champion the translation of novel scientific discoveries into clinical development opportunities or diagnostic platforms, such as detection of minimal residual disease.

  • Participate and thrive in an interactive, team-oriented culture

  • Provide scientific leadership to peers in OBD and assigned project teams (including discovery scientists, clinical researchers, bioinformatics scientists)

  • Regular publication of scientific and methodological results is strongly encouraged, and scientists are expected to develop over time into externally recognized leaders in translational sciences who influence the field of personalized healthcare in oncology

Qualifications:

  • MD or PhD/MD degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. hematology/oncology, cancer biology, molecular biology, immunology)

  • Ability to work with large, multi-omic data sets and familiar with techniques for exploring associations of biomarkers with clinical outcomes.

  • Experience with integrating high dimensional data to generate biological insights is a plus.

  • Minimum of 5-10 years post-MD/PhD experience in an academic and/or industry setting

  • Demonstrated record of cutting-edge research as evidenced by first or senior authored publications in top tier journals

  • Strong passion to drive clinical innovation to improve outcomes for patients

  • Be able to distill complex issues and clearly articulate solutions

  • Ability to collaborate, lead, influence and motivate others

  • Ability to demonstrate effectiveness and growth in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills
