Company: Alector, Inc.
Location: South San Francisco
Posted on: June 8, 2021

Job Description:

At Alector, our mission is to develop therapies that empower the immune system to cure neurodegeneration. Our team is solely focused on developing cures for some of the most challenging diseases facing our society. We are supported in this mission by experienced and accomplished scientists and board members, leading healthcare investors and some of the most innovative pharma companies.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join as a Senior Associate Scientist in the Antibody Discovery and Protein Engineering team at our South San Francisco campus. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists across R&D to discover and characterize therapeutic antibody candidates for Alector's neurodegeneration and oncology programs. You will apply your existing technical skills, learn new skills, and play a key role in helping to augment antibody discovery capabilities. We aspire that you'll be influential in championing and developing Alector's culture of thinking independently and working collaboratively.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Design and execute antibody discovery strategies using hybridoma and/or B-cell technology platforms
  • Evaluate serum titers, process spleen, and lymph nodes, and perform electrofusions
  • Screen and characterize antibodies for binding and functional activity using ELISA, FACS, western blot, biochemical and cell-based assays, and biomolecular interaction technologies such as SPR or BLI
  • Maintain, expand, cryopreserve, and clone hybridoma cell lines
  • Assess lead antibody sequences (Sanger/NGS)
  • Perform small scale antibody expression and purification of antibodies
  • Explore new technologies, opportunities, and automation to improve and/or streamline the antibody discovery workflow and process
  • Communicate and collaborate with external CRO partners for antibody discovery projects

We'd love to hear from you if:

  • Your academic background includes a Bachelor's or Master's Degree (with 5+ years of industry experience) or PhD in immunology, neuroscience, molecular biology or a related scientific field (required)
  • Hands-on experience in antibody discovery using hybridoma and/or B-cell technologies, including immunizations, screening and characterization of antibodies
  • Experience with high-throughput automation, transgenic animals, molecular biology, hybridoma sequencing and B-cell cloning is highly desirable.
  • You take pride in being a self-motivated person, strong team player, excellent written and verbal communicator, fast learner, and creative problem solver

At Alector, we believe that high-performing teams include people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other's assumptions with fresh perspectives and bring creative ideas to the table. We are committed to building an open, diverse, and inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability status, or any other characteristics protected under applicable federal, state, or local laws.

Alector is a great place to learn and experiment. If you excel in a dynamic environment where everyone is committed to finding a cure, where you'll drive growth, this is the role for you. There is no limit to how far you can go with us.

Benefits

While we've focused on what to look forward to during the first year and beyond, Day One is great, too: committed and driven colleagues, a bold and important company goal, state-of-the-art brand-new brightly-lit offices in the heart of the biotech area, competitive compensation and benefits. But these matter only if you're excited to build and own something great, and take on these challenges with us. Come join us.

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.
