Principal Scientific Researcher, Next-Gen Sequencing Technologies

Company: Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd
Location: South San Francisco
Posted on: June 12, 2021

Job Description:

The Molecular Biology Department is seeking a Principal Scientific Researcher (PSR) with well-documented expertise in next-generation sequencing (NGS) library construction, application, and analysis in order to develop advanced genetic engineering and functional genomics platforms. The PSR will function within a highly dynamic team that supports Genentech's Translational Genomics efforts, and be responsible for establishing a broad methodological tool set for multi-omic disease model characterization or custom genetic screening (CRISPR, RNAi, ORF) applications. Translational Genomics spans the interface of human genetics, functional genomics, molecular biology, cellular and tissue profiling, disease model engineering, and advanced computational methodology.

The successful candidate will possess a deep-knowledge of methods for NGS library preparation (amplicon, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, etc.) and quality control, as well as operation of standard NGS instrumentation. Candidates with hands-on experience employing single cell technologies (10x, Drop-seq, etc.) will be prioritized. Proficiency with long-read sequencing systems (Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, etc.) is desirable. Practical understanding of NGS data processing and analytics is a significant plus, as is experience with lab automation.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Biochemistry, Oncology, Infectious Disease, Regenerative Medicine, Neuroscience, or related fields

  • Hands-on experience with preparation and quality control of NGS libraries (RNA-seq, WGS, amplicon, etc.)

  • Working knowledge of NGS platforms (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, etc.) and their applications

  • Working knowledge of single cell applications (scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq, Perturb-seq, CITE-seq, etc.)

  • Documented experience with some or all of the following: DNA nucleases (CRISPR, ZFN, TALEN), cell culture, RNA interference, reporter gene assays, molecular cloning, RNA/DNA/protein quantification, epigenetics, lab automation, and/or viral vectors

  • Experience with biostatistics, bioinformatics, and/or advanced data visualization is desirable

  • Pro-active collaborator with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • A passion for technology development and improving workflows

Responsibilities:

  • Regular collaboration with the NGS core, Molecular Biology Technology Development groups, and Translational Genomics-affiliated labs

  • Broaden the application or improve the quality of cell engineering and functional genomics platforms through effective implementation of NGS methodology

  • Actively pursue new sequencing platforms and engage with external partners for access to equipment, reagents, and/or services relevant to gene editing or functional screens

  • Function independently to explore new technologies and share findings in research publications or presentations at renowned conferences
